Tövkhön Monastery

The Tövkhön Monastery is situated at an altitude of 2,312 meters atop the sacred Shireet Ulaan mountain. Surrounded by rocks and larch forests, it overlooks the beautiful Orkhon Valley.

The monastery was constructed in 1651 by a young 14-year-old Zanabazar, who was not only a skilled sculptor but also a painter and musician. For over 30 years, Zanabazar used the monastery, originally known as Bayasgalant Aglag Oron, meaning "Land of Blissful Solitude," as his personal retreat.

Within the monastery, there was a designated cell where Zanabazar would come to meditate and find inspiration. It is said that in this small stone cell, he composed the Soyombo alphabet, a script that became one of his most significant contributions, as well as several of his most famous works.

The Tövkhön Monastery holds great historical and cultural significance in Mongolia. It served as a place of artistic creation and spiritual contemplation for Zanabazar, who was not only a religious leader but also a prominent figure in Mongolian history.
